The medieval artistic representation of St. Mark as the winged lion seems to be derived from Mark's opening of his Gospel with the description of John the Baptist as a "Voice crying in the wilderness" (Mark 1: 3) and which artistic tradition came to compare to a roaring lion - the lord of the desert.

The ground was stained with blood, At night he was cast into prison and the following day after being tortured all night he expired.
Following his example let us never be timid in the profession of our faith.
